Curaçao's capital, Willemstad, is a UNESCO-listed townscape of pastel Dutch gables facing St Anna Bay, linked by the swinging Queen Emma pontoon bridge. Beyond the city, the west of the island hides dozens of small coves with clear water and reefs right off the beach.

It's a little less polished than Aruba and more varied: a strong food scene, a Jewish heritage that includes the oldest synagogue in continuous use in the Americas, and national parks for hiking and wildlife.

Top things to do

  • Walk the Handelskade and cross the Queen Emma Bridge
  • Swim at Grote Knip and Playa Lagun
  • Dive or snorkel Klein Curaçao
  • Hike Christoffelberg, the island's highest point
  • See flamingos at the salt pans of Jan Kok
