Panama's Caribbean coast has two very different archipelagos. Bocas del Toro, near Costa Rica, is a backpacker and surf hub of stilt houses and mangrove channels. San Blas (Guna Yala) is an autonomous indigenous territory of hundreds of tiny palm-topped islands.

Panama City's Tocumen airport is one of the best-connected hubs for flights across the Caribbean.

Combine it: Connect through Panama City to almost any island, or sail between San Blas and Cartagena.
