The Caribbean has a reputation for being expensive, but it doesn't have to be.
- Pick islands with more competition and flights, such as the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico or Jamaica.
- Travel in late April–June or November, before and after peak season.
- Compare flights into different airports on the same island.
- Stay in guesthouses, apartments or casas particulares rather than resorts.
- Eat where locals eat: roadside jerk, roti shops, fish fries.
- Use local buses and route taxis where they exist.
- Hire a car for a few days rather than the whole trip; compare car hire.
- Buy an eSIM instead of paying roaming fees.
- Book popular tours online, often cheaper than at the beach.
- Choose free beaches and hikes over paid beach clubs.
- Carry a refillable water bottle where tap water is safe.
- Watch out for departure taxes and resort fees when comparing prices.
