Mount Pelée (1,397 m) dominates northern Martinique. Its 1902 eruption destroyed the town of Saint-Pierre and killed around 28,000 people, one of the deadliest eruptions of the 20th century.

Hiking trails from L'Aileron climb to the summit area, and the volcano and its forests are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Tips

  • Start early before clouds build
  • Bring layers and rain gear
  • Visit the ruins of Saint-Pierre afterwards
